Hall of Shame

One of my all time pet peeves is how many well meaning people display our National flag with blatant disregard for the US Flag Code or proper display ettiquette.

On this page I will post pictures of flags I have observed and a brief description of them and their location when possible.

If YOU spot a flag that is in need of repair or replacement, or is just displayed improperly, go to this site and you can report it. The folks will send a postcard or letter to the address you provide with suggestions for correcting the problems. http://www.flagkeepers.com/

Two National flags on one pole!!

Section 7, Paragraph G. "When flags of two or more nations are displayed, they are to be flown from separate staffs of the same height. The flags should be of approximately equal size. International usage forbids the display of the flag of one nation above that of another nation in time of peace."

This particular display was seen in front of Sunshine Mobile Home Park, 7403 46th Ave N., St Petersburg, FL. 33709 When brought to the attention of park managers the reply from them was.."We've done it this way for 40 years, and everyone else does the same thing anyway!"

The flag was taken down for a short period over the summer, but at last check was back up! Shame on you Sunshine Mobile Home Park!!

Tattered and worn

Section 8, Paragraph K, U.S. Flag Code: The flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way, preferably by burning.

There are prescribed manners for the disposal of our flags when they are no longer usable. Contact any Boy Scout or Veteran's Association for instructions. In many cases the local groups will have days set aside for flag disposal and would be glad to take care of the job for you.

This excellent example of non-caring has been observed for at least two weeks in front of a residence at 6895 67th St N. The address has been refered to Flagkeepers for a notice to be sent.
This one was FINALLY taken down. Has not yet been replaced.

Advertising banners on same pole as National Flag

Section 8, Paragraph I. The flag should never be used for advertising purposes in any manner whatsoever. It should not be embroidered on such articles as cushions or handkerchiefs and the like, printed or otherwise impressed on paper napkins or boxes or anything that is designed for temporary use and discard. Advertising signs should not be fastened to a staff or halyard from which the flag is flown.

SO...isn't the Mc Donald's Logo an advertisement??

Like one faded and torn flag isn't bad enough...a whole yard full is seen here!!

Improper Displays

Section 7, Paragraph I,  When displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall,
the union should be uppermost and to the flag's own right, that is, to
the observer's left. When displayed in a window, the flag should be
displayed in the same way, with the union or blue field to the left of
the observer in the street.

This example can be seen at 7000 62nd Way N, Pinellas Park, FL. It has been observed hanging in this manner for over a year now!

Sears Outlet, St Petersburg, FL

You would think with the prices Sears charges for their merchandise they could afford a new flag! I have attempted at least two contacts with the management but they seem to not want to be bothered.  UPDATE: On 10/14/07 I saw a crisp new flag on that pole! Thank You, Sears, for your attention to the matter!

Torn, faded AND backwards!

This lovely example of patriotic pride was spotted at a house not far from where I live. A letter has been sent to the address about correcting the problems. We'll see where that goes. Watch this space for results, if any.

E-Mails

I have received several e-mails, some of which I was able to respond to and some  of which were sent back 'Undeliverable". Thank you Leias for your kind words...

I received this on October 23:

I do not intend to reply to the individual, as I will not lower myself to that level. I will say this....the flag you intend to fly upside down under yours is the very flag that gaurantees your freedom of expression to do that. Will YOUR flag guarantee those rights?

The email was from:
